Sunning Ourselves in Spring - Hardly !

During late March and early April, one normally needs to be very careful with applying high factor sunscreen. Lower neck, earlobes, nostrils and even on those sweltering days I need an extra layer of cream on my bald patch under a baseball cap. However this winter, we haven't had to worry at all about such things. Why........?

In the last three weeks or so we've hardly had any sun whatsoever. Although I haven't officially counted, I reckon we've had less than five sunny days. Even then the temps were pretty chilly for this time of year.

Murky Meribel view

Not that I'm complaining because I understand it's been similar back in the UK, at least we can ski here in Méribel. We've had many days where we haven't been able to see across to the other side of the valley. But when we can it's quite a spectacular sight.

I've lost count how many times on social media I've mentioned the phrase 'Pea Soup'. What I mean by this is that the visibility is less than twenty metres, hence the description means as clear as thick stodgy pea soup. I've felt more like a 'Guide Dog' leading people down the mountain rather than a ski instructor. Having said that, the strong Spring sun has hardly had a chance to transform the snow conditions. The snow at the moment is quite amazing for this time of the season, and we still have massive snow depths on the mountain. Running out of snow in April will not be a problem at all this year!

Mont Vallon in Méribel

With ski teaching slowing down now, I'm hoping to get my big Canon cameras out to start shooting properly again soon. I managed a sunrise and sunset shoot a couple of weeks ago and produced this image. Fingers crossed more of these will follow. In the meantime let's all do a 'Sun dance' together, the opposite to a 'Rain dance' if such a thing exists, and pray for more sunshine and a fun Spring.
